Position: Prep Cook (Food Preparation Worker)

Job Summary

The Prep Cook assists in the preparation of food ingredients and basic cooking tasks in a commercial kitchen. The worker supports kitchen operations by preparing ingredients, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring that food preparation areas are organized and ready for meal service.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Wash, peel, cut, and prepare vegetables, fruits, meats, and other ingredients for cooking.

  • Measure and mix ingredients according to recipes or kitchen instructions.

  • Prepare basic food items such as sauces, salads, and simple dishes as directed by cooks or chefs.

  • Store food properly in refrigerators, freezers, and storage areas.

  • Label and organize ingredients according to kitchen procedures.

  • Maintain cleanliness of food preparation areas, kitchen equipment, and utensils.

  • Assist cooks and kitchen staff during food preparation and service.

  • Receive and store deliveries of food supplies and kitchen materials.

  • Dispose of food waste and maintain sanitation standards.

  • Follow all food safety and workplace safety regulations.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: No formal education required.

  • Experience: No prior experience required; on-the-job training will be provided.

  • Skills: Ability to follow instructions and perform repetitive kitchen tasks.

  • Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to stand for long periods.

    • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

    • Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment.

Work Conditions

  • Work performed in a restaurant or commercial kitchen environment.

  • Exposure to heat, kitchen equipment, and food preparation materials.

  • May require evening, weekend, or holiday work depending on restaurant operations.

Schedule

  • Full-time position (35–40 hours per week).

  • Overtime may be required depending on business needs.

Supervision

  • The Prep Cook works under the supervision of the Head Chef, Kitchen Manager, or Restaurant Manager.
